Ulangrim is a towering spire of rock, measuring 4,100 feet in length and twice as wide, a massive stalagmite that rises from the waters of the Green Nebulous. During the Horgon Era, prospectors recognized the stalagmite's immense size, originating deep within the cavity of a long-extinct volcano, as an unfinished work of Creation, certain to harbor valuable minerals within. After negotiating with the Soot Lords, the owners of Ulangrim, mining operations commenced. The discovery of rich gold veins led to the construction of Fort Hagurthand and the rapid growth of a prosperous boom town.

In a few remaining areas, Ulangrim lies at the heart of Hagurthand. In the lower reaches of Ulangrim, adjacent to the city proper, Ulangrim's exhausted mines constitute Hagurthand's Old City. An expansive region of grand estates and enchanting marvels, it is linked by vast balconies, cable cars, elevators, and scores of spiraling staircases.
