Item Sentience

Category Lexicon
Type arcane lore

Magic items are imbued with sentience by ensnaring a psyche within them. This may be a willing endeavor, as when an individual desires to become part of an instrument of righteousness rather than being consigned to a Soul Gathering System. Alternatively, the psyche may be forcibly bound against its will.

Taking ownership of a sentient item can be a perilous undertaking, particularly if it possesses a malevolent psyche. Inevitably, there will be a conflict of wills, with the item pitted against its owner. Even if the owner initially holds the upper hand, a time may come when they are physically or mentally weakened, causing their willpower to wane. A succession of debilitating injuries, a severe illness, or the ravaging of their mental faculties through a psychic assault could all culminate in the sentient item gaining the upper hand, subjugating its owner and reducing them to a mere puppet.

Grarg's introspective musings remain inaccessible to Rax. This is not the case with Rax's thoughts, however. Unless Rax intentionally severs the telepathic bond, the sword can perceive his thoughts as if they were its own. This is the nature of all telepathic magic items. Some individuals avoid such items, as they never experience the tranquility of solitude, while others welcome the constant companionship.
