The Tharag clan established the settlement of Grongak. The venerable families of this ancient clan constructed Grongak to function as an advance trading outpost and bulwark for safeguarding the region's abundant iron mines.

Grongak was the northernmost city-state of the dwarven clans dwelling in the Karnegmoth area of the Elephant Backbone. When the dwarves started having conflicts with the Tinnanguth, this city was fortified to become one of the most formidable strongholds in the region. In 415 LE, Aphalur and Grongak were united under an empire called Akthol-Tharag.

In 1703, Rilirthad devastated the location. The northern portion of the ruin is a soaring mound of debris. This area constituted the city's northern rampart. When the Delvarhaast chasm was formed, a segment of this wall plummeted into it.
