The severe economic downturn in this region is the result of the area's two active volcanoes, Arhi'phis to the north and Verfaer to the south. During the Dawn Era, unsuccessful attempts at a primordial invasion led to these volcanoes experiencing extended dormant phases as well as violent eruptions lasting for centuries.
The volcanoes Arhi'phis and Verfaer erupted, catalyzing the downfall of the Varelay Empire.
Nîr Ralc, the renowned historian of Thrakopolis, offers this excerpt from his seminal work "Demon Empire of Ma'Ohari" The passage eloquently chronicles the rise and fall of the Ma'Ohari civilization, whose dark legacy continues to captivate scholars and laymen alike Through meticulous research and vivid prose, Ralc transports the reader to a bygone era marked by both remarkable achievements and unspeakable cruelty
Malephar is flanked by the jagged, torn peaks of Kimaris. During the latter stages of the Lith-Crillion Era, the demons of Varelay maintained a slave workforce numbering in the tens of thousands, who toiled in the valley and surrounding peaks. Their relentless efforts resulted in such extensive damage that earthquakes and eruptions grew increasingly common, precipitating a turbulent period known as the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE).
The molten lava that flows through this depression traverses massive canals, most dating back to the era of the Varelay (684 LE - 2620 LE), into immense basins, and past renowned workshops and forges. The lava is eventually recycled, descending a series of switchbacks, returning to a grand lava artery known as Surturs Eyebrow.
Today, Malephar is a smoky, noxious wasteland dotted with geysers, steam and poisonous gas vents, magma lakes, and acidic pools. Claimed by the Goth-Dyvermoir, the area has a long history of being under the oppressive rule of tyrants. The denizens of this region include salamanders, fire elementals, fire giants, Gol'hakh, hell hounds, and other fiery, brutish creatures.
