Murkin is a substantial body of water situated north of the Orchish citadel of Othragmac. The primary source of inflow for this expansive lake is the Gloril river.
Murkin has long been a bountiful fishery and trade route for the settlements along its shores. Since the Horgon Era, it has also been the source of Kuo-toa slavers and plunderers. These aquatic humanoids access the lake through an intra-system rift known as the Murkin Channel, which links Murkin with an Underdark lake in Ikešai. The gate entrance to this rift is located near the lake's bottom. Most of the kuo-toan raiders that emerge from the rift to raid the shores and lands around Murkin are subjects of Fongruk-Toa. During the First Epoch, a major raid wiped out the Elalmoth. The invaders were an allied force of Fongruk-Toa kuo-toans and a Ginrall army led by mind flayer captains and Grimlock infantry.
The deepest point of the lake plunges to a remarkable depth of 1,800 feet. In this abyssal region lies a murky, inky black expanse, the entrance to the Murkin Channel. Beneath the lake's obscured waters lie countless crystals and precious gemstones, including abundant quartz deposits. These mineral-rich resources constitute a valuable trade commodity for the local populace. Intrepid divers frequently descend into the depths, equipped with specialized diving gear, to plunder the resource-laden lake bottom. Some speculate that the kuo-toa purposefully plant these prized treasures to lure in potential captives. An additional peril lurking within the lake are the undead serpents, created by the Úrwath, which serve to guard these divers against the troublesome kuo-toa and other predatory denizens of the lake.
