Avandra and Arcana established this rift with the intent of compelling Demogorgon's army to withdraw from Sondicar. As a heavily fortified valley, the rift would ultimately transform it into a lake; the concept of employing rifts to inundate an area was not novel, as the same strategy had been successfully implemented at Lake Radullu.
