Bakers Dozen began as a collective of 11 rogues serving the armies of Galadriƫl and later other allied forces combating the Black Tide of Thasmudyan. As their operations expanded, they recruited additional personnel for infiltration, sabotage, espionage, and the occasional theft when funds were required. They gained a formidable reputation for their proficiency in gathering intelligence on enemy movements and arranging assassinations for allied groups. Adhering to their modus operandi, they tended to avoid contracts involving murder or actions that could endanger the innocent.
The name "Bakers Dozen" was the tongue-in-cheek moniker they had affectionately bestowed upon their original 11 members. This sobriquet endured and they ultimately embraced it as their own. The units commanded by the Bakers Dozen were collectively referred to as the Aldassinen.
The original members of the group were all wood elves from Hanthaerion. During the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), the Black Tide was driven out of the Lands of Purity. After the war, the Bakers Dozen found themselves underemployed, so they redirected their operatives and information-gathering units to activities befitting a thieves' guild. Much like during the Black Tide War and the Athenian Crusade, these units, now more akin to guilds, are dispersed across a wide expanse of the Lands of Purity. They maintain a presence in nearly every city within this region. Each guild is led by one of the Bakers Dozen. The guilds operate with a degree of autonomy, answering only to the Bakers Dozen as a collective when a significant issue arises or a conflict of interest necessitates deliberation.
To ascend to the ranks of the Bakers Dozen, a thief must rise through the hierarchy, swearing oaths of allegiance first to the Bakers Dozen and then to Aldassinen. They must also become a Shade and undergo a series of demanding trials, though not fatal, which will determine their suitability for admission to the Bakers Dozen.
