Drog was born to a captive Toomrur soldier. At the decision of the High Command Military Court, his mother was sentenced to death for war crimes. Drog, still just an infant, now an orphan, was subsequently dispatched to an orphanage located in Kotharlarg.

At Kotharlarg, Drog was raised in a Fograth Army Crèche alongside other youth bereft of parental care. By the time he had reached the tender age of 10, his striking full-bodied crimson beard had earned him the sobriquet of Firebeard. Disassociating himself from the alleged "clandestine espionage affair" of his progenitors, he elected to adopt the surname of Firebeard.

Drog's keen intellect and exceptional mechanical skills resulted in his enrollment at the prestigious Military Engineering Institute in Gháshulg. Though he had little choice in the matter, as it was the preference of the Fograth, he nevertheless thrived in his studies. Despite his initial displeasure with the assignment, which he viewed as a peripheral role, Drog's talents shone through, and he excelled in his coursework. Upon rejoining his regiment, he served alongside the engineering corps, where he applied his expertise in siege weaponry, fortifications, and various mechanical and ballistic systems.

Drog's persistent heavy drinking in the army led to him being demoted three times. After striking an officer, he was sent to serve in Penal Battalion 321. There, he joined a group of like-minded individuals with bold ideas, who donned crimson eye symbols on their cloaks to distinguish themselves from the non-leaders. Proving more valuable to the High Command than carrying out their sentences, they were released early. Upon leaving the penal battalion, this group became the adventuring party known as Crimson Eye.
