The first Earthspear was constructed by Geb. It was utilized to help separate a substantial section of the central landmass of Angvild. This resulted in the creation of Krarkauk, a floating island. A sizeable basin was left in the wake of this floating island, which came to be known as the Talos Cleft. When the primordials were defeated in the Creation War, Geb's Earthspear was abandoned on Talos Cleft. It is a colossal device, approximately 250 feet long and 20 feet in diameter.
The Gimrune, upon arriving in Angvild, were captivated by the peculiar device, yet they were unable to discern how to activate it. They subsequently transported the device to Mechantus, where they examined it for generations.
Today's Earthspears are modeled on the one Geb constructed. They are significantly smaller, measuring approximately 45 feet in length and 10 feet in diameter. These devices are utilized for excavating the Underdark. The cutting teeth of the Earthspears are harvested from purple worms and imbued with magic, though they still require periodic replacement. The Earthspear functions akin to a drill, with a spinning outer casing that serves as the drill, and broken earth and rock funneled down an inner shaft. The entire device is segmented, closely resembling the physiology of a purple worm. The operator of an Earthspear reclines in a compartment near the drill head, with view ports on the front and sides made of glassteel. The driving compartment houses the controls and levers that regulate the speed and pitch of the drill. An Earthspear possesses a burrowing speed of 6 inches and can maneuver underwater, though it does not float. Unlike Geb's Earthspear, which was powered by a Sphere of Arcane, today's devices are typically steam-coal driven.
The commerce department of Matak contracted a Underdark mining enterprise in 1503 to connect the Great Tradeway with the Sidari-Nyx. The engaged company employed an Earthspear to accomplish this task in less than a year's time.
