The LangurĂ¢pha term "Antal" denotes "steps". This river was christened for its hundred or so steps of granite and adamantine, each marking the inception of a waterfall. In the river's early days, as civilization encroached upon its upper reaches, continuous downriver travel remained unfeasible. Dotting the riverbanks are the remnants of numerous bridges, cranes, and portage routes, constructed in the wake of Liope's establishment, before falling into disuse during the Dao Civil War.

The expansion of the Brownlands into Whalebin resulted in a shift in the river's course towards the northeast.
