In the strictest sense, the Fodder Mine is not a mine. During the Black Tide Reign (1486 - 1546), this region of the Underdark was utilized to create vast hordes of undead. Expansive pits of inky black liquid bubbled and gurgled, as necromancers applied their dark arts, hurling cadavers and slaves into these abysmal pits, sometimes producing undead, and other times satiating the insatiable hunger of the deity Thasmudyan.
When the Artery War (1546 - 1554) raged across the land above, the Pits were worked tirelessly, producing undead soldiers to reinforce the beleaguered armies of the Black Tide. Unfortunately, many of the pits exploded from overuse, killing the necromancers and unleashing uncontrollable, powerful undead. After the Black Tide was driven from Kuzrûnn'n, the Fodder Mine fell silent, its undead fabrication pits hardening into an almost impenetrable solid.
The Fodder Mine is a locale that all creatures would be prudent to shun. This malignant location continues to harbor undead abominations and malevolent spirits abandoned in the wake of the Black Tide.
