Kizan is a rugged valley situated in the southwestern regions of the High Wood Country. The landscape is characterized by sparse vegetation, with the absence of any towering trees that could provide vantage points. The woods bordering the valley's edges are thin and often bear the scars of past fires. This is a deliberate measure taken by the civil defense of Rumaktharga, who maintain the sparse vegetation in the valley to bolster their defensive capabilities against the Angrod to the east and Rúmil to the north. Despite this, the people of Rumaktharga are well-stocked with timber, which they obtain by traveling to the Taurquion Tendril southwest of the valley. There, they harvest large swathes of timber without concern for the environment, as they are aware that the Taurquion regenerates at a far quicker rate than a typical forest.
The valley of Kizan is heavily fortified, featuring dozens of forts and castles. Most of these structures are within cannon and mortar range of a nearby bastion, allowing a fallen fort to receive fire from another. When a fort of Rumaktharga is captured, the dwarves execute demolitions and spike their artillery. They then conduct a fighting retreat through tunnels to another defensive area, rather than the nearest fort. This ensures that a captured fort can be targeted by a nearby fortification, preventing it from being taken through the tunnels. The robust defenses of the region are known as the Rumaktharga Defense Matrix, and this area is considered one of the most formidable in the lands for defensive purposes. The Angrods have found the cost of assault to be prohibitive, nicknaming the gullies, passes, forts, and other defensive features with elven names that convey the notion of "Suicide Alley," "The End," "Last Charge," and "Orphan Maker." The Rúmil have also suffered defeat within the fortified valley, in both the First Kizan War and the Second Kizan War.
North of Rumaktharga lies the former riverbed of the Guirfeint. During the Second Kizan War, Rúmil's strategic plan involved severing their adversaries' access to this waterway. Consequently, the river's course was diverted eastward, ceasing to flow through the valley.
