Urkell is nourished by waters cascading down the slopes of Zan Urk and from subterranean canals spilling out of cliffs along the lake's northeastern edge. This region of the lake is strewn with massive boulders and rocks. An abrupt incline of the same rises upwards towards the walls of the formidable fortress Tas'dvr Mout. This bastion is constructed into the side of a collapsed mountain, with the remainder of the mountain scattered across the slope and in the lake.

In the Lith-Crillion Era and through the Horgon Era, Zan Urk served as a refuge for vampires. The unfortunate prey of these immortal predators were frequently discarded into the city's canals, ultimately finding their way to the lake. Many of these victims originated from the now-defunct Varelay empire. The lake is believed to be haunted by the lingering spirits of all those who perished within its murky depths.
