Map Tha'lith

The rugged Zan Urk mountain range dominates the southeastern expanse of the Ma'Ohari region. The terrain features rocky hills and towering crags punctuated by numerous caves and fuming fissures. Several of these caverns extend into the Underdark below. Additionally, a small number of heavily secured subterranean passages grant access to fortified bastions guarding the subsurface approaches to Tas'dvr Mout.

The streams descending from the caves and slopes convey discolored, chemical-laden waters, generating a pungent sulphuric aroma. These tainted waters drain into the equally noxious waters of Lake Urkell.

The area has had many names over time. The people of Smizerak referred to these mountains as Zan Urk, which is Dwarven for "Red Enemy," due to the region's population of vampires. Long before the Smizerak arrived in Tha'lith, the demons of Varelay called it Abrudax, after one of the more cunning and manipulative members of Emperor Aperoq's harem.

Zan Urk is also known by the locals as the Gianthead Crags, a name that refers to the undead abominations called crawling heads that inhabit the region. These necromantic horrors were created when Raxcvillibus, the master of Tas'dver Mout, suppressed a hill giant uprising. As a lesson to the others, a tribe of the giants was turned over to his death priests. Just as Rax's minions had fashioned death giants from captured fire giants, they also utilized the laboratories of Varelay at Drachlaz to create dozens of the crawling heads that now roam the slopes.

Zan Urk falls within the Blood Triangle, an area plagued by the menace of vampires. The treants of Einglach recount legends of a curse or corruption that befell a group of archons based in this region thousands of years ago, whom they refer to as the Forsaken Six. Since that time, the vampires of Drachlaz and Zan Urk have at times posed a nuisance and occasionally a major destabilizing force (cf. Smizerak).

One of the most renowned resources originating from this region is Blood Marble. This material exhibits a deep crimson hue with distinct black veining, a characteristic that, combined with the area's storied vampire legacy, has contributed to its unconventional appellation.
