A millennium into the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE), the EllubĂ´z system had become better known as the Forge Worlds. The nine core worlds of the system were devoted entirely to war preparations, including building armies, manufacturing arms, and conducting all manner of experimentation. One such experiment led to the transformation of the Lethe river. Cross-breeding alien water lilies with the native flora of the Lethe resulted in a malevolent sentience that fed on the memories of nearby individuals. As these plants decayed, they rendered the water treacherous to drink. After centuries, the concentration became so potent that it could induce ignorance of all prior events. The Covenant, however, found ways to navigate the sentient water lilies, putting the Lethe's waters to use. Alchemists discovered a method to dilute the water, creating elixirs capable of erasing the recent memories of those enticed to consume it.

In its pristine state, water from the Lethe evokes amnesia. When the powerful Asmodeus and Dispater crafted their formidable Devil legions, they engineered them to be impervious to Lethe's forgetful effects.
