The Ghadbakh were a substantial hobgoblin tribe that rose to prominence during the First Epoch. Situated northwest of them were the Gimhak. Originating from the Torengrarg mountains, the Ghadbakhs asserted they constructed Matak using the spoils and commerce generated by their conflicts with Gimhak's "tunnel beards."
In the Second Epoch, the Githirmil under a leader who would become known as the Ageless Emperor, expanded northward into the region of Grashakh. These nomadic tribes occupied these mountainous territories until the arrival of the Orchish Empire. When the Fograth captured Matak, they assumed control of the entire area surrounding the city. This was followed by two centuries of insurgent activity. At the outset of the Gimhak War (1470 - 1503), Ghadbakh leaders negotiated a treaty with the Orchish Empire, granting them greater autonomy and transforming Matak into a vassal city-state.
