The Heg-Taug islands (of Sighast) have been home to Shou pirates since the Second Epoch. Many of these pirates descend from five families banished from Shounejo in 1151. At the time, the young Shou Empire lacked the naval strength to assert control over the islands, allowing the exiles to settle among them. These exiles did not remain idle, with some turning to piracy for income and others seeking retribution against those who forced their expulsion. They have maintained such activities locally against Shounejo and as far as the eastern coasts of the Aerie of Dragons, their free-booting only curbed by sufficient tribute. The pirates of Heg-Taug pose a constant threat to the Shou and Khazarkar Empires, yet in times of war they are eager to serve as privateers and mercenary marines.
