Wind of Duplicity

Category Magic Items
Type Psionic Dampening Array (planetary-scale)
Location Bal-Kriav

The Wind of Duplicity is a formidable device of the Lost Ages. It possesses the power to influence an entire world, either obscuring the populace from detection or concealing the activities of a world's inhabitants. During the Demon Spawn War, the latter effect was utilized by Asmodeus and his loyal generals. On Dis, they invoked the Wind of Duplicity, temporarily concealing the construction of their devil legions.

To operate, the device necessitates the psychic convergence of eight or more exceptionally gifted individuals, with each fully committed to using the device's powers on a population.

Technical Nature: The Duplicity Array

The Wind of Duplicity functions as a wide-band frequency emitter designed for Pacification and Stealth:

  • Neural Static (The "Wind"): The device emits a low-frequency psionic "hum" that doesn't just block divination; it creates a cognitive blind spot. To an observer, the shielded area simply "isn't there" in their mental map of the world.
  • The Psychic Convergence: The requirement for "eight or more exceptionally gifted individuals" isn't for magic—it's a Biometric Security Lock, requiring a synchronized neural handshake from multiple high-level Lost Age signatures to prevent a single rogue AI or individual from seizing control.
  • The Cognitive Anchor: The device doesn't just calm senses; it enforces Systemic Apathy. By folding space to stay in a geostationary position above a rebellious world, it can bathe an entire hemisphere in neural-dampening frequencies, making the population physically unable to sustain the "will to resist."
  • World-Scale Suppression: During the Demon Spawn War, Asmodeus didn't "cast" a spell on Dis ; he reactivated a Lost Age satellite to mask the industrial heat signatures and logistical movements of his devil legions.
The Neld-Rac Incident: Hacking the Chaos Maelstrom

When Neld-Rac initiated the Duplicity Period in 1529, he wasn't just performing sorcery. He was performing a Planetary System Hijack .

  • Power Draw: Even as a Lesser Power, he lacked the internal energy to power the satellite. He had to bridge the device's power intake directly into the Chaos Maelstrom, using it as a raw, unfiltered battery.
  • The Resulting Glitch: Because he used chaotic energy instead of the stabilized Icarus Core power it was built for, the "Wind" became erratic. Instead of perfect stealth, it caused the "duplicity" effect—divinations didn't just fail; they yielded inaccurate data, effectively gaslighting the entire population of Bal-Kriav.
