The Chaos Maelstrom is a tempestuous storm of entropic energy leftover from an ancient era. Typically confined within the Web of Magic, a pollutant that even the powerful weave spiders cannot eliminate, it occasionally manages a temporary escape. A mini-rift or other anomaly releases the storm upon the land and inhabitants below. Akin to the Sea of Entropy, its effects are unpredictable, with rivers reversing flow, grasslands shifting color, creatures becoming mutated, and the landscape transforming.
The Chaos Maelstrom, it is said, arose when the deity Benevolence vanquished his spouse Kesserine.
Benevolence, overcome by an unbridled fit of rage, battled Kesserine... With each mighty strike of her pure white sword, the sky cracked with thunderous force. Kesserine fought feebly against such passionate fury. After a day of battle between them and their armies, she was slain. Her essence merged with the Weave, becoming a chaotic storm, the Chaos Maelstrom. The sorrow and grief over the false marriage and the death of the wife he still loved was too much for Benevolence. Exactly one year later, his body first froze in place, then petrified, rising into the clouds in pursuit of his lost wife. It did not leave this world, but instead became trapped on our side of the Web, left to drift upon the Weird Flow.

In the year 1296, an ancient entropic organization unlocked a passage to a distant realm. This inter-system conduit, the Sink of Chaos, acted as a beacon for a drifting Chaos Maelstrom. For weeks, this tumultuous storm hovered over Hleittil, cascading entropic energy upon the land and its inhabitants below.
In 1829, a Chaos Maelstrom froze a segment of the Nautrek Sea, generating a temporary land bridge between the continents of Elemantum and Brucrumus. This event also cracked the Elemantum Boundary Ward. Subsequently, an army from the Cinderfall empire traversed the breach, besieging the city of Mogdúlg and then joining the Chaos's legions under the auspices of the Flux Pact.
