The Caltrops of Ginnoth are obstacles constructed to impede the advancement of naval vessels. They comprise sizable objects of varied shapes and dimensions, submerged in the waters of Ginnoth. The initial use of the term "Caltrops of Ginnoth" occurred when the elderaunts of Selûn, then a city-state, sank vessels in the channels as a means of deterring pirate raids from the Buccaneer Archipelago.
The lighthouses are illuminated to guide vessels into the secure waterways of Ginnoth, but when facing peril, they are extinguished, and the Ora Tubruš commences relocating them into defensive formations. Only the naval forces possess knowledge of the safe passages at any particular hour.
The Caltrops of Ginnoth constitute one of our nation's most formidable defenses. Over the centuries, they have contributed to the demise of thousands - predominantly during periods of armed conflict, yet also in times of tranquility.
Admiral Hurtugen, in his esteemed work on naval history of the Ivory Asylum - "The Caltrops of Ginnoth"
The Caltrops of Ginnoth come in a variety of sizes and forms, with some as massive as oceangoing vessels. These structures are virtually immovable, having been constructed in situ. They serve as guides to channel ships into them and are used in conjunction with smaller, mobile caltrops. Some of these caltrops are designed to reflect sound, constructed with concave shapes that cause underwater sound waves to reverberate back from them. They were built to be employed against subsurface attackers, with defenders detonating explosives underwater near one or between a group of these caltrops. While their effectiveness is limited by the specific conditions required for their use, they represent one of the many unique configurations found among the Caltrops of Ginnoth.
In the Third Epoch, Ivory Asylum emerged as a dominant naval power. The utility of the Caltrops of Ginnoth has diminished alongside their ascendance in naval supremacy.
