The Pillar of Chronos is a towering edifice, standing an impressive 3,000 feet tall, fashioned in the shape of a coil with sand cascading down through its interior. At the uppermost reaches of the Pillar, the sand emerges through a rift, only to exit through another rift situated at the very base.
Constructed by Chronos and Time's Stolen Legions, this facility was designed to house powerful, potentially useful foes of the Covenants during both the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE) and the later Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE). It operated as a paid service, with Chronos acting as a reluctant ally of the primordials in the first war and an independent force during the Demon Spawn War.
After the Demon Spawn War, the Pillar of Chronos was abandoned. The captives of that tumultuous period remain confined to this day. As far as anyone is aware, those imprisoned from the Dawn Era and the God Era have never been liberated or escaped. They are sequestered within the Pillar, beyond the sight and reach of mortals. Supernal runes in the place clearly warn that any interference with those incarcerated in these impregnable areas will incur the wrath of the powers that hold dominion over the realm.
The small segment of the Pillar of Chronos serves as the headquarters for the Aerdhaith. This group does not act as custodians of the site or aim to liberate anything, but they do regard the Pillar as hallowed to their deity. Consequently, they permit visitors but exclude looters or those harboring malevolent intentions.
The Pillar boasts thousands of chambers and cells. The place is impervious to any force that nullifies or dampens magic. It is said that this power stems from the Pillar's ability to manipulate the flow of time around it. Within the Pillar of Chronos, time stands still as far as aging is concerned. The place also houses the scroll bearing the original written form of the Time Stop spell. The primary function of the Pillar of Chronos is to serve as a prison for exceptionally perilous creatures. For a fee, Aerdhaith will place the offender in temporal stasis, where they will serve their sentences in a state of suspended animation. Due to its "divine protection", the Pillar of Chronos is regarded as the most secure prison in the realm.
