In the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), slave battalions constructed Barhaz Halarax as a control area for demons emerging through unstable rifts. These rifts connected Bal-Kriav with a world under the command of Graz'zt. Barhaz Halarax served as a marshaling point for demons arriving in Bal-Kriav. Linked to Graz'zt's home world Azzagrat, many of these demons had no desire to join Graz'zt's legions, having avoided the forced conscription preceding Graz'zt's invasion of Urizigar. However, fleeing did not save them all. The rifts created by Graz'zt's arcanists were akin to storms, sweeping across the land in random directions and pulling demons through a rift that, in an instant, transported them to a distant system. In the Quarat'un System, on the world of Bal-Kriav, these new arrivals found themselves herded into the numerous containment sites within Barhaz Halarax.

Graz'zt's rift makers took shortcuts in the creation of these rifts. As a result, they were unstable. The cause of this instability was the use of Naanabrak as a catalyst for opening holes in the Web of Magic. When these rifts collapsed, they would release magical energy outward for hundreds of feet, vaporizing flesh, bone, stone, and just about anything else. Graz'zt's demon conjurers learned to use naanabrak to mitigate these explosive reactions. When a rift began to buckle, the chambers would be collapsed over it, thus reducing the explosions to several dozen feet instead of several hundred feet. Barhaz Halarax has 29 collapsed chambers of naanabrak. Although this stone is quite valuable, the dangers of the ancient ruin keep most scavengers at bay.

Barhaz Halarax boasted an abundance of torture chambers and prison cells. When Lukoon was still an angel, he endured an unfortunate stint within one of these cells. Amidst Barhaz Halarax, the haunting sounds of torture - agonized screams, demons' cackling, and the cutting, hacking of torture implements - are particularly chilling. These eerie noises have been documented to inflict psychic trauma, driving even the most resilient to madness or prolonged bewilderment.
