Bathmulg is encircled by a belt of hills and mountains. The valley exhibits minimal vegetation. Following substantial downpours, vast bodies of water emerge on the surface of this ochre clay flatland. The water never exceeds a few inches in depth and persists for several days until absorption into the clay. During the warmer months, Bathmulg transforms into a parched, fissured field.
Many Bugbear tribes in the surrounding hills and mountains utilize the region's clay to construct basic huts. For a time during the Second Epoch, under the rule of the green dragon Mathongrarg, they lived a more respectable existence. They resided within a vast labyrinth beneath the surface, serving as the outer defensive line for the passages leading to this dragon's lair. However, the dragon's extended periods of slumber, with her minions left unattended for years on end, eventually led the bugbears to seek out better living conditions. A few weeks later, a drow war party caught Mathongrarg in her sleep, killing her on 28 Saunas 1201.
Bathmulg's most striking characteristic is a cavity known as Mathongrarg's Eye. During the evening, the vibrant green glow from this vast opening radiates outward for miles around. Its origin is a wonder referred to as the Ink Sphere.
