Mathongrarg, a powerful green dragon, ruled a substantial portion of Maar'tolaak for centuries. By the Year 840, she had amassed several thousand hobgoblins to serve her. Mathongrarg and her minions remained a persistent menace to the people of Anarukthalan. Her principal adversary was a primordial naga named Rilthang, who commanded the swamp Sareon and had a horde of Graagvrii at her disposal. In 922, Mathongrarg's forces were defeated when they became trapped between Anarukthalan's army and Rilthang's Viidostor army near the present-day Korbortun. Most of Mathongrarg's army was decimated in the engagement. Thereafter, Mathongrarg worked to rebuild her forces, but was never able to assemble a substantial enough army to hold any territory for an extended period.

In the years around the turn of the millennium, Mathongrarg forsook Maar'tolaak. Within the spires of Bathmulg, she established a new abode commanding a vista of the captivating Ink Sphere.

In the depths of Imgangreth, she bore numerous progeny.

As the years passed, she spent increasing amounts of time in slumber, reminiscing about her former days of grandeur.

On 28 Saunas 1201, Mathongrarg was caught unawares by a Drow war party and slain. In addition to the substantial hoard, one drow took a couple of incisors as trophies. Two decades later, these incisors came into the possession of Raxcvillibus, who crafted them into an ornate, non-magical sword that would become known as Grarg. On 6 Bloom 1239, Mathongrarg became fully aware of his new state, as the sentience of the sword wielded by Raxcvillibus Dumu-loc, a figure who would become a legend, largely through the sword's machinations.

The sword, infused with the sentience of the green dragon Mathongrarg, abruptly interrupts his contemplation: "Engaging a dragon to carry out a kill is an exorbitant endeavor, so whoever our adversary is, they possess substantial financial resources. In the dragon's position, I would never have hazarded an encounter with an unfamiliar entity. The avarice of this aged dragon proved to be his undoing. An insatiable craving for greater wealth plagues all of our kind."
