Drow are a product of the Demon Spawn War ( 89 GE - 269 GE ) . During this conflict between the Covenant and the demons, an army of wood elves was under the command of General Lolth. They battled for control of the Draugluin Sector on Kriav, a region that experienced cycles of profound decline and resurgence. As the Draugluin Decay took hold, both sides sought refuge in the vast subterranean realm below, an untouched land of abundance. The ensuing subterranean warfare, often to the demons' advantage due to their engineered environment, led Lolth to utilize a forbidden device from the Lost Ages. She used this technology on herself and her loyal followers, creating a new elven sub-race known as the Drow. Following the Covenant's victory over the demons, the Drow and numerous other mortal races were left to forge their own path.
The first civilization of the Drow originated in the Castamion Region. In this subterranean domain beneath Draugluin, Lolth reigned as the First Drow Empress for four centuries. Renowned for her prowess in magic, archery, and swordsmanship, she was a national hero who frequently addressed threats personally. Lolth's rule was harsh and competitive, favoring the females of society. With a growing number of devotees, fanatics, and military orders, Lolth ascended to the status of a Higher Power on 401 LE, departing the mortal realm. At that time, the first Drow empire, which was then the sole domain of the world of Kriav and its subterranean reaches, was left without a leader and no clear line of succession. This triggered a series of civil wars, driven by religious, commercial, and other competing interests. Theologians believe this upheaval was an intentional shock, designed to scatter the Drow and thereby propagate the faith of Lolth.
This First Splintering of Thiliorúth scattered the drow on Kriav. In 411 LE, observing the "Chosen Path of Lolth", a feywild fuse, nearly a thousand ventured to the world of Bal-Kriav, reclaiming the ruins of Tyelmantar. The second shock to the empire founded by Lolth, named Thiliorúth, occurred in 604 HE. Again fractured, groups sought refuge, some embracing the Chosen Paths of Lolth. On 12 Brightstar 610 HE, on Bal-Kriav, the survivors of one such group established Filion'lyr.
Drow communities where the veneration of Lolth is prevalent are overwhelmingly matriarchal in structure. These societies are governed by females who are either ardent devotees or profess to be fervent worshippers of the Spider Queen.
