Built during the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), Tyelmantar functioned as a Covenant prison fortress. It confined demons deemed worthy of study, interrogation, and occasional prisoner exchanges - a practice not commonly applied when dealing with demon-kind.
In 213 GE, the city of Tyelmantar endured an assault by a primordial war machine, an Iron Colossus dispatched from the dusty expanses of Helagenn. This construct, still carrying out orders from its long-vanished Primordial masters, laid waste to the city's walls and towers before being lured westward into the underwater chasms of Lake Chaszmyr. The prison sustained significant damage, and instead of following the Covenant's established judicial protocol of liquidating all inmates during an earthquake-like event, the garrison attempted to contain the prison breaks. Within days, key figures had fallen under the sway of more cunning demons. The outcome was a great slaughter, as Tyelmantar fell into the hands of a series of petty demon satraps.
Under the dominion of demons, Tyelmantar never presented a significant menace to the Quara'tun Covenant. Subjugated by fiends for half a century, the prison witnessed immense anguish and the recurring incarceration of demons by more powerful entities of their kind.
In the year 239 of the God Era, Tyelmantar was reclaimed by Abbathor and his Mîmêk Army.
In the year 411 LE, during the First Splintering of Thiliorúth, nearly a thousand Drow departed their homeworld of Kriav for a new domain. After traversing a feywild fuse, these former subjects of Thiliorúth went on to resettle the ruined city of Tyelmantar.
In the First Epoch, the drow empire Urthin-Mejin, through martial conquest, incorporated Tyelmantar into its territorial domain.
Tyelmantar possesses a formidable forge that was abandoned in the aftermath of the prison escape. This forge offers light fortification to enchanted armor at a reduced cost and expedited construction timeframe.
Architecture
Tyelmantar is divided into two distinct parts. The upper section, constructed by the Drow, is a city scattered across hundreds of stalagmites. Most of these structures are connected by bridges, and when too distant, travel is facilitated by gondolas, magic, or flying mounts. The lower city, built by the Covenant, exhibits Turkûn-styled architecture - everything twice as sturdy as necessary. This military workforce was led by General Naraz-Nâru. The Drow who seized control of this area later opened the prison, rendering the region habitable. As the population grew, the city expanded into the stalagmites, facilitated by conjured earth elementals, hard work, and magic. Wealthier individuals settled in this developing stalagmite city. For ease of movement, most visitors prefer the lower city. However, those seeking a wild and exotic nightlife invariably venture upwards.
