Mulun-Dûna is a Svirfneblin settlement that originates in the deep canyon of Izen'nâth. It is a shadowy place that only receives occasional traces of sunlight. Mulun-Dûna is an ancient settlement dating back to the early Horgon Era, founded by settlers from the ancient empire of Isan-Kun. Throughout its long and illustrious history, Mulun-Dûna has at various times been a holding of a foreign empire. During the Horgon Era, it fell under the watch of the storm giants of Aslauthroa. Later, in the First Epoch, it became a vassal state of the Zandûl-Khâl.
In the middle of the Second Epoch, the city was at the height of its prosperity, with a population exceeding 50,000 individuals from diverse racial backgrounds. The Svirfneblin have always constituted the city's majority, with the liberal-minded residents welcoming the influx of other peoples. Following the Onyx Enmity War (915 - 920), the city provided refuge to many drow and Mîmêk refugees.
The surface entrance to Mulun-Dûna begins in the shadowy recesses of Rânnîrgûk. This rift is one of the many such rifts and canyons found in Izen'nâth. Rânnîrgûk extends for approximately eight miles. The final mile of this rift houses the buildings, farms, walls, and towers that make up the surface entrance to Mulun-Dûna. In the upper reaches of the town, near where it opens to the fresh outside air, goat and pig farms are situated. Where Rânnîrgûk meets the outer walls of Izen'nâth, a vast Underdark canyon commences. This shadowy, dark area stretches for five miles into the depths of Faeglor. Mulun-Dûna is spread across four miles of this canyon. Numerous bridges span the upper levels of the canyon, while the canyon floor holds hundreds of smaller bridges crossing a narrow river that descends into the depths below.
Mulun-Dûna lies on the western border of two rival empires. The city typically aligns itself with the people of Runelderil over those of Zandûl-Khâl. This allegiance stems from a prolonged history of subjugation, spanning 47 years, during which the Mîmêk of Zandûl-Khâl coerced and indoctrinated their citizens to battle the drow of Runelderil. Accounts of this oppressive period are still recounted, memorialized in the city's grand monuments celebrating liberation and honoring the heroes of the uprising.
The Church of Geb commands a significant presence in Mulun-Dûna. The town receives a multitude of surface travelers owing to the acclaimed birthplace of Geb in Izen'nâth. Adherents of Geb revere Izen'nâth, and particularly Kernsking Koils, as sacred ground.
The Sûrag road leads into Mulun-Dûna from the southeast. This thoroughfare links the town with Gholompotl and the markets of the surface city Nirzanâth.
