One of the casualties of the Onyx Enmity War (915 - 920) was the city-state of Sigatharkin. Like other areas near the sea floor breach, it was submerged when the Nermanis Sea drained. Those who could, escaped south to Geb's Foothills and the vassal city-state of Nurum-Maluk. Bolstered by refugees, many of them veteran soldiers who had fought the drow of Ilaleztice, the people of Nurum-Maluk, especially the Mîmêk, rebelled against their Âkhi overlords. Nurum-Maluk then proclaimed itself an independent city-state.

On 5 War March 931, the Zandûl-Khâl Monarchy was established under Queen Zandûl. Having once served as a private in the army of Sigatharkin, she witnessed the draining of the Nermanis Sea and now held supreme authority. Skilled in warfare, she opted for more subtle tactics to defeat her opponents. After emerging victorious against a much larger foe, the Queen persuaded the Âkhi to regard them as equals. No longer seen as a vassal, this arrangement facilitated fairer trade between the two nations, who remain each other's largest trading partners to this day.

While the war with the Âkhi raged, the kingdom expanded to the northwest, assimilating the towns and villages that once answered to the Âkhi. The most substantial of these was Troghaven, which granted the kingdom ready access to the deeper subterranean tiers.

If you ever hear the sound of rushing waters, it may be the powerful flow of the Torrent of Nermanis, still transporting the debris of Sigatharkin and countless others who met their downfall.

In the Second Epoch, clerics of the Khazarkar Empire commenced disseminating the teachings of Set within the kingdom. Over the subsequent two decades, the Church of Set ascended to become one of the four preeminent religious institutions of the realm.

The Gradorian population of Zandûl-Khâl are descendants of the Draguron.
