Cerbere is a vast, one-hundred-mile-long depression carved by the relentless flow of magma rivulets, smokers, steam vents, and other volcanic forces. The region was named by the ill-fated demon empire of Varelay. During their reign, the demons ravaged this area with their unforgiving mining activities, eventually triggering more frequent eruptions of the volcanoes in Hen'khas. Cerbere became a volatile landscape, with lava lakes and rivers coursing through it for most of the year. This period of heightened volcanic activity came to be known as the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE).
The highlands bordering this desolate region constitute the northernmost fringe of Kimaris. During periods of volcanic activity, the lava spills into the area, forming numerous noxious and smoke-shrouded lakes of molten rock. The landscape is dotted with an array of geysers, steam vents, and minor volcanic edifices.
Cerbere shelters bands of formidable fire giants, salamanders, and other fiery brutes. While most answer to Goth-Dyvermoir, enough remain independent to render this region perilous for their forces and travelers alike. The territory north of Cerbere lies within the claimed domain of the Burterinii, a disputed area strewn with the broken implements and bones from many a fierce conflict between the two rival empires.
