Goth-Dyvermoir was founded in 832 by the red dragon Hellbleaker. The population under his rule comprised primarily the same races as today, with the exception of the fire giants and the Gol'hakh. During the early years of the empire, there was considerable chaos and corruption. To help manage the empire and provide the people with a strong religion, Hellbleaker welcomed the clergy of Huhueteotl. This alliance lasted for over six centuries, transforming the empire into the epicenter of religious power for the god Huhueteotl.

In the year 1455, the deity Huhueteotl was slain by the god Surtur. Following Huhueteotl's demise, Orias Vual and other strongholds of the empire were infiltrated by religious zealots of Surtur, known as the Yllding-Hel. They persuaded many to abandon Huhueteotl (given his death, this was a straightforward task) and instead pay homage to Surtur.

In 1456, an army of fire giants and Gol'hakh led by the Asvard Fjoll descended upon Orias Vual. The formidable force was so large and intimidating that the city's keys were relinquished to the besiegers. The emperor at the time was Hellbleaker, the dragon emperor and founder of the empire, who abdicated by fleeing underground. He took most of his sizable treasure trove and an entourage, seeking to rebuild the church of Huhueteotl. However, their efforts were unsuccessful, as many of the acolytes of the dead god were either killed or enslaved by troops from Aebilchunus, or became lost in the seemingly endless lava tubes of Sephu'phis, prey to other hungry predators of Tiyaphis.

The Furrouth under Gorthunder governed Goth-Dyvermoir for the ensuing six years. After Gorthunder 's untimely demise during the Retribution Campaign ( 1462 ) , his daughter Oni'tira, the high priestess of the Vinjof Sillodis, acted against the generals attempting to transform the empire into a military dictatorship. Oni'tira, supported by the Asvard Fjoll, replaced her late father's autocratic rule with a theocratic system. For the subsequent 22 years, she led the empire alongside an elder council of clerics. Since then, ecclesiastical governance has predominated, with only brief interludes of military dictatorship.

In the year 1351, the empire relinquished all territorial claims to Illadvard and the Caralda wastes, thus concluding the Caralda Affair.

In the Third Epoch, the empire's commercial class ascended as a prominent cohort. This was predominantly a consequence of the Trelshum Syndicate, adeptly advancing mercantile affairs over the hawks inclined toward warmongering.
