Surtur, the son of Kossuth, is a Primordial. During the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE), he utilized volcanoes as a means to breach the Web of Magic that protects worlds. At locations such as Graer, these rifts were opened to the Chaos realm, which the Primordial Lords then exploited to lay siege to the affected worlds.
Early in the Creation War, Surtur was given a command under Poseidon. At the time, Surtur possessed no notable reputation. Like many on both sides, he acquired his command due to the demise of his predecessor. Once he had a command and was entrusted with responsibilities, Poseidon grew envious of the young man's charisma, confidence, daring in battle, and burgeoning leadership abilities. Poseidon assigned him to northern Athoreon, directing him to utilize his gifts in controlling lava to harass the Nawirrûs Covenant. It was a poorly conceived operation that Surtur did not endorse. Surtur claimed it held a high probability of failure and would undermine his credibility if it faltered. Nonetheless, he followed the orders. The disaster that ensued with the Graer Breach did not have the desired effect on Surtur's growing status. Surtur's skills were soon required in other theaters, and his role in the debacle was soon overshadowed by other victories.
In the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), Surtur fought alongside those he had previously opposed. As part of the Nautrek Deal, he joined the Quara'tun Covenant. One example of his assistance was the creation of the volcanic feature known as Typhalumus.
Both Geb and Surtur are remnants of the time before mortals, when the gods and primordials fought over the spoils of creation. Those on the side of Creation sought to preserve the worlds, while the primordials desired to destroy it all. In the Creation War, most of the primordials were either destroyed, imprisoned, or driven back into Chaos. Geb and Surtur, however, remained. They were discovered several times by angel trackers, but attacks on them required a concerted effort, so the primordials fled. Geb burrowed through Bal-Kriav, creating a vast expanse of caves and tunnels, a maze of passages, and collapsing many behind him. The trackers lost their quarry, and when they did come upon him, they lost because they fought under his conditions. The same occurred with Surtur, as he burned his way into the earth, leaving a wake of magma and fire in his path. These two primordials proved adept at evading pursuit and fighting on their own terms. The gods and their angels finally abandoned the chase and left the task of guarding against primordial misdeeds to the mortals. The attacks never came, for both Geb and Surtur had gained the favor and popularity of the mortals. As the gods began to acquire worshippers and their power increased, Geb and Surtur soon followed suit.
The High Theologian of Thrakopolis, Habanin, presents his discourse on the "Primordial Gods"
As the Lord of Fire, Surtur is revered primarily by fire giants, fire archons, fire elementals, and other fiery entities. His home domain is Muspelheim. He seized control of this world during the God Era, transforming it from a realm of chaos, fire, and air into one charged with the energies of negative entropy, fire, and air.
Surtur is the sworn adversary of the Lord of Ice, the primordial deity Thyrm. On the realm of Bal-Kriav, their most profound rivalry manifests through mortal intermediaries engaged in the Thrones War.
In the year 125 HE, Surtur manifested at the Siege of Imrik. In this conflict, the fire deity wielded his blade Aratourn to obliterate a portion of the outer defenses surrounding the Volgad city.
Surtur rose to prominence in the realm when he slew Huhueteotl. In 1455, Surtur traveled to Orrai, a fiery cauldron in the Abyss where the god Huhueteotl resided. Surtur commanded an army of fiendish fire giants and dozens of red dragons. During an epic battle between the two gods' armies, Surtur confronted Huhueteotl. The two fought for nearly thirty minutes, with their respective forces pausing to witness a clash that few beings ever experience. Ultimately, Surtur defeated and permanently slew Huhueteotl on his own world. The death of Huhueteotl triggered an earthquake that drained Orrai into the deep recesses of the abyssal realm, resulting in the demise of thousands of troops from both armies as they plunged into the ensuing crevices.
With the demise of their deity, Huhueteotl's adherents, particularly those who venerated fire or utilized that domain, became devoted to Surtur. Goth-Dyvermoir, an empire within Bal-Kriav, was one such nation that abandoned Huhueteotl and embraced the worship of Surtur.
When Huhueteotl perished, Surtur claimed his domain of fire and incorporated it into his extensive portfolio. Surtur's formidable divine power is such that his devoted clergy gain a +2 damage modifier per die roll on all fire-based spells.
Temples dedicated to Surtur are often erected in proximity to geothermal phenomena. Surtur is believed to govern the mighty, fiery core of Bal-Kriav, overseeing the flow of its molten stone. During the Dawn Era, Surtur forged the Great Vein of Surtur, employing this river of lava to populate regions across Midrêth with his followers.
Surtur's next most despised adversary is the deity Geb. Surtur, a pyromaniac by nature, aspires to transform the surface of Bal-Kriav into an expansive sea of raging flames. Consequently, he finds himself at odds with Geb, who, as an integral part of the Balance, endeavors to maintain a semblance of harmony and equilibrium among the powers that govern the world. Geb, the Master of the Earth, holds back the fiery rivers of magma by instigating earthquakes, cave-ins, and confronting the forces of Surtur through the devotion of his worshippers.
Surtur has steadily accumulated power over the past 500 years. During this period, the Surticon aided in crushing the Black Tide of Thasmudyan (refer to the Artery War), thereby gaining recognition as a regional power in Hells Womb. The death of the god Huhueteotl and the loss of his strongest worshiper base at Goth-Dyvermoir further increased Surtur's influence. Following Huhueteotl's demise, Surtur was elevated from a lesser to a greater power within Bal-Kriav's pantheon.
