Bigmar began as a series of colossal bridges spanning the Hlond Stor lava river. The fiery denizens of Phazgamir, predominantly fire giants and firenewts, undertook a significant portion of the construction. They were free workers, compensated by the city-state of Akalgas. The purpose of the bridge was to facilitate trade with the upper reaches of Kazgon. On a few occasions, the area was militarized by petty lords seeking to transform the crucial crossing into a strategic base, but Akalgas swiftly eliminated these nuisances.

In the First Epoch, the lava lake Soti Nedd became the dwelling place of a band of salamanders. These fiery, reptilian humanoids have never been particularly inclined towards peace or commerce. Consequently, the town of Bigmar, which developed at the base of the bridges, gained notoriety due to the constant raiding on trade caravans. The town grew from the presence of mercenaries, again predominantly fiery inhabitants originating from the direction of Phazgamir. Until the town became self-sustaining, Akalgas provided their wages and funded the area's maintenance.

Bigmar is situated along the Sidari-Nyx, a passage linked to the Great Tradeway. The settlement's size is restricted by the treaties governing the Great Tradeway, which generally limit the size of settlements, garrisons, and militarization in such areas. However, a special exception for fortifications was granted to Bigmar due to the constant threat from Soti Nedd's salamanders. The town's security is comprised of representatives of the town's interests, Mîmêk units serving Brogtrun, units protecting the trade interests of the Orchish Empire, and those serving Akalgas.
