Firenewts are a magically engineered race created during the Dawn Era by Kossuth. They were forged by capturing lizardfolk and imbuing them with primordial fire, the combination of entropic energy and fire energy. After countless failed trials, the result was a hardy, bipedal lizard-like creature resistant to flames and capable of spitting liquid fire. The primordials intended to utilize them by the hundreds of thousands as cannon-fodder during the Creation War. However, the slow production process and the firenewts' rebellious nature led the primordials to abandon this plan. When the primordials were eventually defeated, the angels and gods overseeing Bal-Kriav and other realms determined that the firenewt species posed no threat, and thus allowed them to remain.

Firenewts are restricted to specific environmental conditions, as they necessitate intense heat to avoid potentially entering a dormant state.

Late in the Creation War, Primordial artificers discovered how to leverage the blood coursing through hibernating firenewts to induce a dormant state in others. This transfusion procedure was subsequently implemented within the hibernation bays encircling the central axis of the Helas Vessels.
