Jothvauk is a subterranean citadel encircled by a fiery lake. In 141 GE, it became a refuge for several hundred fire giants who wanted nothing to do with the impending angel and demon war. They departed the mining pits of Vith Ruus, following ancient lava tubes to the rocky isles of Onairion's Pool, where they constructed grand citadels. During the Hoof Front (215 GE - 230 GE), the citadels of Jothvauk were assaulted numerous times, occasionally serving as a refuge for Covenant forces.

The isles resembled the formidable fangs of a mighty dragon, each a fortified stronghold bristling with defenses. The centerpiece was Jothvauk, a place of walls and towers, castles within castles, a bastion of certain defeat. A direct assault against Oratu Iru would result in fewer losses.
