Piranoth crafted the fire giants to serve as his military forces. They were placed upon the realms he had created, a tangible indicator of his presence and watchful gaze. This was little more than a symbolic gesture, as the vastness of these worlds was such that one could stake a claim a hundred miles distant and remain undetected for a decade. Some of the fire giants' policing actions were directed against Piranoth's former minions, typically frost giants or storm giants who had chosen to become masters of their own destiny.
The fire giants did not become a genuine force, a thriving civilization, until the Creation War. At the outset of the war, there were approximately 20,000 of them scattered across the universe, a number that would swell tenfold by the war's conclusion.
The fire giants are the most numerous and powerful of the giant races in the realm. This power is attributed to their involvement in the Creation War, with Surtur leading twenty legions of them. These veterans had fought in numerous conflicts, not only on Bal-Kriav but also on other worlds that had been wrested from Covenant control. When the primordials were defeated, Surtur went into hiding, and his troops dispersed across the realm. Most of them delved deep into the earth, fearing that the angels and gods would banish them back to Chaos, where they would be lost and never have a chance to establish themselves. However, the angelic search parties were only interested in imprisoning or banishing the most dangerous of the primordial minions.
Since the Dawn Era, the fire giants have expanded their domain across Bal-Kriav. They have been aided in this colonization process by Surtur and his dominion over the Great Vein of Surtur.
