In 410, the formidable red dragon Bothorthesh established the Thashangriel Empire. This name paid homage to a renowned crimson wyrm that once dwelled in the region surrounding Kii Nev. When Bothorthesh and her retinue of salamanders conquered the northern territories of Kii Nev, they forcefully unified the quarreling firenewt tribes through a combination of might and fear. Her salamander subordinates were appointed as military governors. In its early history, the empire was plagued by civil wars and military coups, typically orchestrated by ambitious Muneyd'vith generals seeking to ascend the empire's chaotic hierarchy. By 640, the Muneyd'vith had succeeded in overthrowing the salamander governors, assuming control as the new military rulers.

Thashangriel is often characterized as a nation steeped in malevolence and deceit. The empire dutifully caters to the capricious demands of red dragons, who are in turn served by the Muneyd'vith governors, generals, and other satraps. Within Thashangriel, power has historically been the domain of the most formidable and adroit.

The shou pirates are prevalent throughout this empire, concentrated predominantly in the port city of Ag Staaz. These brigands primarily prey upon the shipping vessels of the Khazarkar Empire and the Shounejo. Due to Thashangriel's protection of the pirates, Ag Staaz endures continuous harassment from the Dazi Tetzezan.

The current ruler of Thashangriel is Empress Tolun'drand, the Earth Burner, an ancient red dragon.
