In 1448, Thashangriel initiated a proxy war. Employing pirates, they targeted the Khazarkar's shipping. Diplomatic efforts to end the piracy and the open harboring of pirate ships at Ag Staaz were unsuccessful, as the diplomats were murdered, fed to hell hounds, and met with similar terrible fates. The Khazarkars responded by sending a fleet of ships to Ag Staaz, shelling the city and blockading it for several months. Thashangriel agreed to cease sponsoring pirates and shielding them in Ag Staaz's harbor. Thashangriel then began mobilizing their troops and hiring mercenaries and ships from across the realm. Akumîlû spies quickly learned of these movements. In the Year 1550, Thashangriel's transport and warships, most of them foreign-owned, sailed north and landed in Miradelgûn. An army of Aggorath, Muneyd'vith, dragons, giants, and other humanoids attacked the southeastern territories of the Khazarkar Empire. Adrimân was the first Khazarkar town to fall in the conflict, though it would be recaptured and lost by both sides multiple times.
The Thashangriel forces made substantial progress into the Khazarkar territories, engaging in widespread burning and pillaging. The vast expanse of Khazarkar land allowed their armies to employ "Fabian tactics." By the Year 1453, the Thashangriel armies had stretched over 400 miles. With their supply lines and communication channels extended to their limits, the Khazarkar began launching attacks from the dense forests of Nelaryotar. They decimated the Thashangriel's rear garrisons and supply depots. The next four years witnessed a defensive war waged by the Thashangriel. In the Year 1457, the dragon armies resumed their offensive and had reached within sight of the towering pyramids of Nibar-Pharân.
In the Year 1460, the Khazarkar Empire forged a pact with the Nitthirân djinni of Gludragh. The Nitthirân assisted the Khazarkar by conjuring up epic sand storms that raged from the Sands of Hell into the Erethor sea. The storms' immense size and strength caused Thashangriel to lose thousands of soldiers and see their supply ships wrecked on the coasts. After these devastating losses, the Khazarkar navy was able to prevent Thashangriel from supplying their army by sea. This resulted in famine and desertion for Thashangriel's deployed ground forces, leading them to sue for peace. They paid the Khazarkar Empire 15,000,000 in gold and provided 2,000 Aggorath slaves, then had to pay to have their defeated army shipped back home. This war wrecked Thashangriel's economy for nearly a decade, and most of their debt to Shounejo had to be forgiven.
Some of the Nitthirân who fought in the war were apprehended assisting the adversary. Those apprehended by the Akumîlû swiftly found themselves confined in vessels or enslaved to serve out their sentence in a military unit. Several enterprising Nitthirân remained with the Khazarkars, assuming roles as advisors to the Pharzîmrâth.
