Gistborri is part of a ring of volcanoes that, during the Creation War, served as primordial outposts. Collectively called Surturs Kettles, on each cone's charred slopes or inside near rumbling lava tubes, Surtur's fiery minions built military complexes. Supplying and garrisoning these far-flung outposts, each situated hundreds of miles apart, posed a constant challenge. Overland treks were perilous, as Athoreon remained largely under enemy control. The alternative means of supply and reinforcement was Surtur's Artery, a journey fraught with its own perils along the lava flows and numerous rivulets.
A sudden shift in pressure, a cave-in - whether natural or magically induced - or a wall of force dropped into a lava canal, can have catastrophic consequences for a container barge and its delicate cargo. A troop ship overwhelmed by lava can be a truly dire situation. Fiery individuals may withstand the heat, but what of those less equipped? Not all can swim, and even if the area is shallow enough to wade, the currents may be treacherous, pummeling one's body with chunks of rock.

On 7 War March 2002 DE, the Graer volcano was breached. Covenant undermining pierced the mountain's side facing the Pearl Sea, flooding the volcano, submerging the Graer Rift, and deactivating three of the volcanoes. Gistborri was one of the dead volcanoes. Passages and elevators, descending deep underground and mostly leading to a vein of Surtur's Artery, once a lifeline, became submerged in sea water. Soon after the Graer Breach, Surtur departed, assisted in this evacuation by a storm titan named Thjorygg. Like Surtur, Thjorygg is often blamed for the diminished display of primordial power in upper Athoreon.
The expansive ancient complexes of Gistborri, constructed to accommodate the towering frames of fire giants and other primordial minions, now lie overrun with beasts and monsters. Many are inaccessible from the outside, concealed behind extensive piles of collapsed rock. Expeditions into this region have returned with ornate weapons and armor, often deemed ostentatious or impractically embellished with spikes and blades.
