Inirthak Garathral

In the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), the northward advance of Demogorgon into Sector Inirthak prompted the summoning of one bound by the Nautrek Deal. Reluctantly, the primordial lord Surtur, an ally of the Covenant, answered the call to action. To grant the Covenant more time to prepare for the impending onslaught, they narrowly voted in favor, permitting Surtur to undertake the fiery terraforming of the great depression of Agulbandal. Two volcanoes, Typhalumus in the northwest and Vaermund in the northeast, would be created, rendering the landscape volatile and treacherous even for demon armies.

With the threat of Demogorgon swiftly approaching, the Covenant required Surtur to complete his work with haste. Crafting volcanoes was an arduous task, in fact far more challenging than in the bygone era when the landscapes of worlds were in flux. To satisfy his superiors' demands, Surtur needed to take shortcuts. Unknown to his virtuous Covenant overlords, this entailed sacrificing a primordial prisoner. Lukoon, a Covenant leader willing to make difficult decisions, escorted Surtur to a prison moat called the Thunder Halls. Within this floating detention facility, Surtur and Lukoon freed one of its inmates, a watery elemental named Typhalumus. An adversary from the Creation War, this mighty primordial now yearned only for death. After nearly four centuries of imprisonment across various Covenant prisons, the last being the Thunder Halls, she had grown weary. Surtur told Typhalumus that her name would be long remembered after her demise. Deceitfully, Lukoon claimed she would return to the Sea of Entropy, reborn through Chaos's whims. Seeking death and scarcely trusting her exploiters, Typhalumus followed their commands, relinquishing her energy to Surtur. Surtur upheld his pledge, naming his newest volcano after Typhalumus. The energy of Typhalumus was used to locate gaps in the subterranean stone, forging a path hundreds of miles long that, with aid, would create an upper branch to the region's central lava conduit, the Annbild Hrolmir canal. Surtur was satisfied with the result, anticipating that his fire giants would deem Typhalumus and Vaermund worthy homes after the war with the demons.

In the Horgon Era, a natural cave-in facilitated the cooling of this volcano. With its connection to Annbild Hrolmir severed, Typhalumus transitioned into a dormant volcano.

Inside Typhalumus's caldera, along its lower western rim lies the city of Gúluzgash. It was established during the Second Epoch by advancing orc legions. Past Gúluzgash's walls and outer structures sprawl hundreds of miles of winding tunnels. These honeycomb the mountain, descending into the subterranean realms of Garathral. This lower region is the domain of the Soot Lords of Vaermund. It is an oppressively hot area filled with noxious fumes, a refuge for fire giants, salamanders, fire trolls, and other ferocious creatures.
