The island region of the Sea of Mourning, Necrocrypt, consists of three primary islands: Gathrot, Sahuld, and Urêthîn.

In the God Era, Gathrot emerged from the depths, forged by the fiery furnaces of two volcanoes, Groarnfer and Gruggvein. Though they may appear ordinary on the surface, within their core, ten miles below, lies a phaethon brood. These mighty beings, the offspring of Surtur, were the first to be utilized by this fire god in his vision for shaping the appearance of Bal-Kriav.

The islands of Necrocrypt have long been a sanctuary for necromantic practices and have witnessed the rise and fall of numerous civilizations. For nearly two centuries of the Horgon Era, Necrocrypt served as the epicenter of the Durkoth empire Abâthigûr. The empire's founder Molakh-Búle, and sole ruler until the Durkoth Descent ( 995 HE - 1355 HE ) , actively encouraged the practice of necromantic arts. The presence of roving pacts of undead in the sewers and countryside posed a constant challenge for the empire.

In the Second Epoch, necromancy once more became a focus for Necrocrypt. This resurgence coincided with the arrival of the wizard Caliguworm and others of similar disposition. Under their guidance, the island evolved into a formidable Necrohold.

In 1015, compelled to depart by the Gulimbor Cataclysm ( 996 - 1203 ) , the Melephaeusans abandoned their Gulimbor homeland and settled on Gathrot isle. They would endure for just over a decade before succumbing to the ancient evils of the island. The figure often held accountable for the empire's demise is Caliguworm.

The Necrocrypt is the birthplace of the Cult of Worms. During the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), these islands were designated as the rallying point for the leaders of the Black Tide. If their campaign faltered, they would retreat to Necrocrypt and rebuild their unholy armies. Victorious in the Black Tide War, they would not return until the subsequent conflict, the Artery War (1546 - 1554).

The Black Tide of Thasmudyan dominates Necrocrypt. Although undead roam freely here, the place teems with vibrant life. Flora, fauna, and insects thrive, though most are abnormal, tainted by the region's pervasive negative energy and centuries of malevolence, culminating in the ascension of the undead deity Thasmudyan.
