Durkoth Descent

mutated Durkoth, one of the "Chosen"
Category Events
Location Midrêth
Period 995 HE - 1355 HE

In the year 862 HE, three centuries after vanishing into the Void, four primordial vessels arrived on the world of Bal-Kriav. Aboard each vessel was a Durkoth commander and thousands of their kind. They had brought along other races to serve as subordinates. Across the expansive region of Midrêth, the Durkoth established distinct domains of control.

To this day, the reasons behind the mutation of certain Durkoth remain a mystery. Upon undergoing their transformation, they abandoned the surface world to reside beneath the waves. One theory suggests that inbreeding led to alterations in their genetic makeup. A more plausible explanation, however, is that they were simply reverting to their original purpose. On Osâchar, their civilization thrived in dry regions, relying primarily on deep wells as a water source. Upon arriving on the world of Bal-Kriav, they found themselves surrounded by vast bodies of water, a factor that may have triggered the changes in their physiology, culminating in the Durkoth Descent. Another hypothesis posits that worshipping one of the Saints of Maen granted the ability to dwell beneath the seas; those who did not receive this boon still underwent the aquatic mutation but lacked the yearning to venture into the deep waters, ultimately leading to dehydration and demise.

Spire of Molakh-Búle - Abâthigûr

Those aboard what would become better known as the Spire of Molakh-Búle established settlements across the isles of Necrocrypt. Around 995 HE, Abâthigûr's Durkoth began their transformation. As their bodies became more suited to the sea, they felt a yearning for the deep waters. Unable to resist the urge, they developed gills and webbed extremities, and swam away from everything they had once held dear. They abandoned their subjects on Necrocrypt, leaving the empire to fend for itself. In 1011 HE, Abâthigûr, an offshoot of the Horgon Empire ( 159 HE - 537 HE ) , came to an end.

The merfolk patrolling the edges of Necrocrypt report that many Durkoth entered Zen'nêlkhush and vanished, while others traveled north to Orat-Khagor. In this region, they became masters of the ixitxachitl. Their slaves constructed Ogharkú for them. Deep within this place, they installed hundreds of Hibernation Bays, then built an allegedly impenetrable vault around them. After the Durkoth mysteriously disappeared into their vaults, their former minions went on to establish the Ranturâpha Empire.

Spire of Krak-Oth - Ak'mrîtun

The Spire of Krak-Oth landed in the northern reaches of Grashakh. Overlooking the marshes of Droonesh, they established the settlement of Argruxiel. A decade later, the Ak'mrîtun Empire ( 872 HE - 49 ) was founded, with Krak-Oth as its inaugural emperor. By 1200 HE, all the Durkoth of this empire had departed for the dark seas of Cthorgo and the Green Nebulous.

The Theegans, the predominant populace of Ak'mrîtun, reigned for centuries following the Durkoth Descent. As horse cultists gradually gained sway within the empire, the people were condemned by their former Durkoth master, now revered as the deity Krak-Oth. In Year 43, these horse-worshipping adherents were cursed, awakening the next day transformed into the centaur abominations known as the Jara.

Spire of Neld-Rac - Rângilan

The Durkoth inhabiting the Spire of Neld-Rac differed from the rest of their kind on Bal-Kriav. Most exhibited a greater inclination towards scholarly pursuits and experimentation (cf. Muneyd'vith ) rather than conquest. Today, those seeking information on the primordials and the Creation War ( 1486 DE - 8777 DE ) often turn to artifacts retrieved from the Spire of Neld-Rac.

Around 1017 HE, the Chosen of the Spire of Neld-Rac commenced mutating. All of them ventured southward into the Sea of Mourning, eventually reaching a location known as Rângilan. In this abyssal undersea domain, the Durkoth under Neld-Rac sowed chaos and dissent among the populace. They subjugated sahuagin and other aquatic races, compelling them to construct a colossal undersea city called Limac-Nîr. Built to such enormous scale and magnificence, only a minuscule portion was ever utilized by the inhabitants. Certain areas were constructed in such bewildering manners that creatures entering would become lost within the structure.

The insanity inherent in the design of Limac-Nîr is such that only one of unsound mind can genuinely comprehend.

Spire of Rioch Tetrax - Inendeep

The Durkoth of the Spire of Rioch Tetrax never managed to establish a sizable empire. The region surrounding the Spire was perilous, unsuitable for those unaccustomed to wetlands and disease. Around 1150 HE, Durkoth began departing Nagdúrzol and other small settlements in the Troll Bogs and its subterranean domain. They ventured far out into the Pearl Sea, settling in the undersea geothermal canyon Tyelcirion. In this area, they became masters of the region's Merfolk. The Durkoth's influence was centered around Inendeep. On land, the Durkoth's departure left their former subordinates, the Laupha overseers, and a multitude of slaves, to their own devices.
