In the 240th year, the citizenry of Mechantus founded the initial democratic state.

The people of Engineen are largely free-thinking, peaceful, and innovative. Some of the world's most remarkable advancements are credited to the Gimrune engineers and scientists of this island nation. Several of their technological breakthroughs are attributed to the exploration of the ruins of Hive. In this insect-infested region, the Gimrune discovered rune stones and exotic weaponry of an ancient insectoid race called the Auhtai. These weapons were based on sound technology, which the Auhtai referred to as Päiki-Synhö. The engineers and scientists of Engineen experimented with and reverse-engineered these weapons. The largest sound-based weapons they ever created were the Sonic Horns. Additionally, in the Auhtai ruins, they uncovered extensive rune tablets on advanced chemistry, including the properties of gases. It would take nearly a century before they were able to produce helium.

Gnomes are renowned for their prodigious creative abilities, yet often struggle to apply their inventions in practical ways. They frequently delegate the task of discerning the utility of their ingenious contraptions to the human populace.

In the year 835, the inaugural airship, a massive balloon, was invented by skilled Engineen craftspeople. Subsequent versions of these airships were utilized to explore distant territories. In 946, the Soaring Cloudrunner became ensnared in the slipstream behind the Clouds of the Dead God, propelling it thousands of miles away into the interior of Brucrumus. The Engineen crew was compelled to land in the Lands of Purity, losing contact with their kin on Angvild and establishing As'lumix as their new home. It was not until 1752 that they were able to reestablish communication with their long-lost brethren.

In 1555, a Gimrune engineer named Sigmaloew created the first steam engine. These engines were utilized to drain the seawaters eroding the underside of their island. Angvild, an unnatural formation, was once again undergoing fracturing. Substantial resources were invested in finding a way to stabilize the island and hold back the encroaching waters. This was where the steam pumps proved invaluable. The wealth and influence to be gained from this endeavor led to the growth of Engineen's government, which had become large and bureaucratic, with competing factions. The civil engineering department focused on stabilizing the island through magical means and reinforcing weak areas with supporting structures. Engineen's Department of Mechanical Engineering, meanwhile, sought to draw out the water using mechanical devices. Another group, the Department of Flight, looked to the horizon, aspiring to construct flying ships to evacuate the island for more stable lands.

As the steam engine technology progressed, larger engines were fabricated for pumps and substantial drills. Confronted with insufficient water resources, the gnomes utilized the drills to penetrate Angvild's exceptionally rigid bedrock. At a depth of 2400 feet, they reached the water table and pumped water through sizable subterranean aqueducts. Over the subsequent decade, all residences on the island were equipped with running water.

Another of Engineen's numerous departments is the Creed of Tech. Clandestine, they have made significant contributions to Engineen's technological advancements. In 1347, their "Spy-Techs" stole spatial rift technology from the Har'kish. Engineen's X Ships were retrofitted with this technology, becoming known to their adversaries as Void Lurkers.

In Engineen, one seldom inquires whether one is employed by the government, as the vast majority participate in governmental affairs to some degree.

In 1734, Engineen's democratically-elected government was supplanted by a military junta. This occurred due to issues of overpopulation. The pacifist democratic leaders refused to seize a nearby island controlled by the Shounejo Empire. The military seized power, mobilizing for war. The following year, the Arrowowyn War commenced, lasting four years and culminating in the capture of Wynvild. In 1742, the military relinquished control, returning the government to its elected officials.
