The Azer are dwarves that were magically altered due to prolonged exposure to Cruharr's deep rocks. This transformation occurred when the Armarek Legion captured elements of the Azer Army serving under Danzar-Khâl. The captives were transported deep into the bowels of Bal-Kriav, ferried along Surtur's Artery to Cruharr's toxic mines. The exposure to Cruharr's deep rocks rendered them immune to fire and imbued them with aspects of elemental fire, most notably flaming hair and beards. Over time, the slaves lost their original language and were "re-educated" to use Giant like their fire giant overlords.
At Cruharr, one of the daughters of Surtur, the crafty Ingelix, devised the notion of appointing Furrouth as slave masters and labor supervisors. After enduring centuries of toil under these malevolent efreet, the azer grew to despise them more than the fire giants, and gradually forgot that the fire giants were the source of their misery.
As one of the conditions of the Felakgathar Contract, Cruharr was sealed off after the Creation War, which spanned the years 1486 DE to 8777 DE. The azer were liberated, and the Furrouth were dispatched to labor on the Endless Wall.
