The Taugkar Warrens are a series of underground complexes located approximately one hundred feet beneath the Izagûnê swamp. Historical maps depict these as eight subterranean towns. Today, bards characterize them as dusty, treacherous labyrinths, home to both beasts and enemies - promising riches and renown to the courageous. This representation bears truth, as the warrens harbor an unusually high concentration of basilisks and hydras. Occasionally, these perilous creatures emerge to the surface, with most migrating southward towards the wetlands of Gimirkazân.

From the surface, the Taugkar Warrens are accessed through the ancient sea wall known as Vald Fallaug. Late in the First Epoch, this wall served as cliff-side dwellings for approximately one thousand Nermanean refugees. They were among the many groups seeking a new home after the collapse of the Nermanis Syndicate. As the Nermanis Sea receded, the surrounding area suffered from drought and famine. Those who settled in the Taugkar Dig, once a prominent Nermanean mine, became known as the Taugkar. The Taugkar Dig, which eventually lent its name to both the mine and the town that grew around it, lies two hundred feet up the walls of Vald Fallaug. Prior to the draining of the Nermanean Sea, the town had docks built into the 100-foot-high cliffs between the sea's surface and the sky above. A small fishing and mining community arose, with homes constructed from abandoned mines and pontoon boats supporting the growing population. When the Nermanean Sea receded, the townspeople built steps and lifts to access the incoming transportation.

The commerce minister of Maurkac kept the Taugkar Dig operational until the very end. The wrecks of Nermanean merchant ships, laden with iron and silver, lie strewn and abandoned along a stretch of Sahânzar from the Taugkar Dig to the ruins of Maurkac, left to ground as the sea receded. Six of these vessels remain intact, serving as memorials to the two centuries of the Syndicate's prosperous and peaceful reign. Today, they form the town centers for the descendants of the Nermanean empire, permitted to function as vassal states within the Khazarkar Empire. In return for this self-governance, they remit a sizable portion of their revenue to the Khazarkar treasury.

This resulted in a series of ramps and steps descending 200 feet to what became a dry seabed. These old mines dot the cliffs and for a time supplied valuable silver and iron ore to the Nermanis Syndicate. When the empire fell, some of the former miners and their families took to living in the old mines. They expanded on them, creating living areas that often found themselves flooded or submerged in ankle-deep water from the seepage flowing down from the swamp hundreds of feet above. The Taugkar constructed a network of shafts and drainage systems to redirect this water to the cliff face. Between 1300 and 1400, the Khazarkar Empire began to lay claim to the lands surrounding the area. They "convinced" the Taugkar to abandon their squalid cave dwellings and relocate to the cities. This came at a fortuitous time for the Taugkar, as they were embroiled in a war with a madman and his bizarre experiments, including the keeping of monsters as if they were livestock. It remains unknown why the Khazarkar have never attempted to eliminate this menace.
