By the start of the Hoof Front (215 GE - 230 GE), the demon lord Orcus had secured mastery over much of the Aerie of Dragons. One of Orcus's demonic adversaries in the region known as Hells Womb was Demogorgon. These long-standing foes, ever conspiring against one another, saw Demogorgon devise a plan to open a rift in Orcus's domain. Pressed by the Covenant from the west and north, Orcus fortunately identified the minion keeping the rift active. This servant of Demogorgon, weary of his master's cruelty and meager rewards, was turned by Orcus with promises of great wealth, land, and status. The rift's closure left behind a vast expanse of otherworldly dark liquid, which came to be known as Vul Lom, the Dark Water.

The lake's contents are largely composed of an otherworldly liquid originating from the realm of Abyssm. While similar to water in terms of sustenance, this liquid is notably darker and more dense. Despite the considerable depth, the strange waters defy the typical laws of fluid dynamics, remaining suspended rather than settling to the lowest level. In certain locations, expansive sections of the deep blue liquid may resemble a wall of water, held in place by an unfamiliar force. The more intelligent creatures inhabiting these areas have adapted, swimming through these aqueous barriers to access the dry land on the opposite side.

The liquid from the Abyssal world infiltrated Leret Dovah, pooling in a surface depression before burrowing into the Underdark, where it crept along passages and into caverns, unhindered by gravity. Denser than water yet breathable, it disregards the typical laws of filling the lowest area. In sections of the Underdark where water does not weigh it down, it presents a remarkable sight, with streams and rivers of the substance flowing through the air like bridges, housing fish, crabs, and even the occasional kuo-toa swimming along them.

The lake's surface to a considerable depth serves as the hunting grounds for malevolent water nymphs, who prey upon one another and other creatures. Some possess formidable magical abilities, dominating or coercing minions through sorcery to carry out their commands. The southern reaches of Vul Lom are patrolled by the kuo-toa of Zoethall, while the northern areas are under the vigilance of aboleth satraps, locked in perpetual conflict.
