The Yaram river originates in the northwestern Kilth mountains. It flows southward then westward, terminating at the Sea of Mourning. The free-spirited bard Zab described it as "placid, deep in parts, gentle in flow", but neglected to mention the many hazards it poses. These include the trackless marshes lining its banks, ancient canals leading to murky pools, and overgrown ruined towers, walls, keeps and watchtowers, the dark remnants of Bloodtusk's reign.
In 1465, the city of Salandirik was captured by the Black Tide admiral Bloodtusk. Among the spoils were documents detailing the long-standing peace treaties between Salandirik's previous governors and the Scrag tribes of the Yaram river. These accords, which respected the scrag's claim to the river's length, dated back to the settlement's founding under the pirate captain Gadbog. Though the Siege of Salandirik is often described as an amphibious invasion, the truth is that Jairall's forces received aid from the landward side by Maleraunt guerrillas based out of Tholig-Mizin and the rolling hills of Khâl-Rakhs. These groups sought to open trade along the Yaram river, the only viable route to the prosperous coastal settlements. The previous owners, Ivory Asylum, had opposed such commerce, believing that trade with the "savages" would only embolden them and provide a path for attack. The fall of Salandirik led to the construction of forts and bounties on every scrag head brought in.
The canals and opaque pools that adorn the river's banks were once utilized as spawning grounds for undead and other abhorrent entities. The remains of the fallen, friend and foe alike, were discarded into these waters to swell and decay, then resurrected by Black Tide necromancers.
In the Burterinii-Bloodtusk War (1795 - 1800), Yaram's fortifications would serve their purpose one final time. After the allies captured the area and abandoned it following the collapse of the Bloodtusk Regime, the scrag began to return. The new owners of Salandirik once more renewed the treaties with the river's people, yet this action reintroduced a hostile element to the highlands. Certain canals and pools of the river are still shunned by the scrag and others who take up residence there. These specific locations remain tainted by the malevolent rituals once conducted, occasionally giving rise to entities empowered by a life-draining chill.
