For much of the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), the sector of Chen'gom in the Troll Bogs was conquered land under the demon lord Sess'innek. One of the people under his command was a brilliant biologist named Mordegrine. She was tasked with getting the local populace to serve under her master's banner, but the demon's brutal methods meant few were willing to assist them. Fortunately, they had no shortage of trolls coming through Rifts linking this world to the faraway Abyss. The nature of the area she commanded, a maze of rivulets and wetlands, piqued her interest in troll advancement. On 15 Temporal 131 GE, in one of the demon labs of Aša Abrai, her first success came with the creation of a new troll sub-race, the Scrag. Through abyssal infusion, Mordegrine engineered a troll variant adapted to spend more time underwater, with some even capable of breathing in both seawater and fresh water.
After the demons were vanquished and expelled from Bal-Kriav, the scrag proliferated outward along the shorelines of Brucrumus and into the abyssal depths of the oceans, as well as distant landmasses.
