The city of Zathess, situated in the eastern region of Tha'lith, was established during the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE). The violent eruptions of Zathess devastated the surrounding jungle, giving rise to the desolate expanse known as Caralda. These eruptions, fueled by a concealed rift, also facilitated the arrival of Firenewt settlers, who claimed to be peaceful followers of Kossuth, seeking new homes amidst the great lava flows.

Natives of a distant system, of the thousands who made the journey, only several hundred survived being swept along a lava river and then into the volcanic depths; today, a near-perfect system exists for trapping those coming through the rift that still feeds Zathess. The first to arrive found themselves cast into the wastes of Caralda, marooned on the world of Bal-Kriav. The Firenewt settlers, their descendants devoted followers and proselytizers of Kossuth, commenced construction of the settlement of Illadvard in 14 HE, and five years later, began mining the great adamantine veins of Zathess.
