In the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), conjurers of the Black Tide sought methods to open a rift to the Abyss. They ultimately succeeded in 1477, when Katrana employed a spell from the Unausprechlin Kulten to open a rift in the depths of lake Nellaegaer. The other side of the rift connected to the Abyssal world Inguvile, specifically a fetid, disease-ridden swamp known as Dydehk. Regrettably, the magic went awry during the casting, resulting in a permanent breach in the Web of Magic.

The fissure came to be known as the Abyssal Funnel. During the time it remained open, almost a hundred demons emerged from its depths and laid waste to the surrounding territories. The demons that were not eliminated either went into concealment or allied with malevolent factions, with some even establishing their own malicious organizations. This fissure resulted in the drainage of Lake Nellaegaer.

The Abyssal Funnel was sealed in 1513 by the then mortal Aredhel and the Arch-Mages of Merioss. Some have asserted that Arcana directly contributed to the closure of the gate. The portal is secured by the Nellaegaer Force Ward. This force ward is of divine casting, rendering it exceptionally arduous to breach.
