In the early days of the First Epoch, Theegan witches would routinely visit the Isle of Tarelcil, honing their skills in an area where the fabric of the Web is weaker, enabling them to cast arcane spells with greater ease. After conflicts with those seeking to claim the island, a group of witches united, driving out the malevolent forces. The witches continued to support one another, constructing permanent residences and mountain-side chateaus accessible only through teleportation magic or by flight. On 5 War March 49, within a palatial compound amidst the clouds, the foundation of the Prism of Merioss, the Arch-Mages of Merioss, was established. Their primary objective was to combat evil, with the secondary goal of preserving Galathien as an open, unclaimed sea.
In the year 1222, the renowned Black Wood and a cadre of Merioss wizards succeeded in vanquishing the wielders of the powerful magical artifacts known as Blizzard and Firestorm.
This guild was once composed of two sects of wizards, the White Wizards of Merioss and the Gray Wizards of Merioss. In the Black Tide War ( 1465 - 1486 ) , most of the White Wizards of Merioss were slain. One of their greatest displays of magical prowess was during the Luran Campaign ( 1481 - 1483 ) , where they killed thousands of undead with fire and lightning. After the loss of so many Whites in the war, the Grays assumed control, actively and more covertly opposing the widening Black Tide threat.
In the year 1513, the Arch-Mages of Merioss and the then mortal Aredhel sealed the Abyssal Funnel, a rift to the demon world of Inguvile.
In the Athenian Crusade ( 1539 - 1551 ) , the White Wizards once more held sway, bearing the standard of righteousness to the edges of the Lands of Prity.
The Arch-Mages of Merioss have long supplemented their income through mercenary work for those of good intent, as well as enchantment services. The guild also lends its magical expertise to more prosaic tasks, such as magically reinforcing the long-standing Gazulud-Gik bridge and facilitating the dredging of Phanax, which has enabled it to become a thriving commercial port.
